Why large firms rarely launch flagship at CES

It is like an appointment, in early January each year, the largest Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the world will take place. Through all these years, it has been noticed that the big guns often do not launch flagship in this occasion. Below will be 3 main reasons or factors causing many major manufacturers to not select CES as the destination for their key equipment.

  1. Poor purchasing power at the beginning of the year

Normally, the busiest shopping season of the world (as in the US and Europe) will focus on the end of the year, near the holidays like Black Friday, Christmas or Lunar New Year in our country. For this reason, launching flagship at this time may not work well because after the formal introduction, approximately 1 month, new products are widely sold. Therefore, if selecting CES to launch a product, which starts in January, the device will reach to consumers around February. It is the time not favorable for both buyers and sellers, especially with the flagships – the items with “in heaven” costs!

  1. Nature of CES

As everyone knows, CES is a consumer electronics fair, not a playground where mobile devices like smartphones can alone proclaim. This has caused some big manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC to choose Mobile World Congress (MWC) to recommend their flagships. Some decide to organize separate events like Apple, while the remaining majority as LG, Sony, Asus,… transfer this time to the summer days (around April or May) or wait until the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) event in September each year.

In short, perhaps because of generic universality, not priority for mobile devices, CES is not attractive to smartphone producers.

  1. Unsuitable time

For example, if Samsung brings Galaxy S7 to CES 2016, it seems to be irrelevant. That is because so far, the second key product in 2015, Note 5 has been officially sold out for several months around the world, these features are still considered new to many people, so if Samsung hastily announces a new flagship, they will compete with themselves.

Moreover, to be called a flagship, the product must meet all the elements of design, configuration and feature while these things always require a certain time for the brain to re-create. Therefore, normally at CES the companies only offer a few products to explore the market, understand trends and tastes of customers in the new year or bring out some things related to the flagship. Rarely will they announce their flagship products!
